The main purpose of Kindergarten is to strengthen the sense of dignity and self-worth within the young child and their family and to prepare the children for Grade 1. The program intends to provide a 'child centered' environment where youngsters can work and play individually or in small groups at learning centres. Large group activities such as gym and music are also provided. Parental involvement is essential in a Kindergarten program. Parents are asked to serve as volunteers on special days, for field trips. In addition, the involvement of people and agencies in the community are emphasized. Field trips to various places in the City will be taken throughout the year.
The Kindergarten Program is available to students who have reached the age of five on or before December 31st. Kindergarten is offered on a 475-hour per year basis operating on Monday through Thursdays. Students in kindergarten with mild/moderate learning needs also receive specialized programming from a Speech Language Pathologist, a Speech Language Assistant or an Early Literacy Program based on their identified learning needs.
